TC Testing

DSCN2492Knowing the properties of the soil or rock the ground heat exchanger will be built in allows us to fine tune the size and configuration of the ground heat exchanger. Geo-Xergy has invested in the latest thermal conductivity equipment and training for testing both vertical boreholes and the soil for horizontal ground heat exchanger.

A conductivity test is not required for every geothermal project. It is an economic exercise that is based on the potential savings in the cost of building the ground heat exchanger versus the cost of conducting the test.

A thermal conductivity test should not be conducted without first building an accurate energy model of the building and ground heat exchanger model. Four pieces of information are needed before recommendations are made for a thermal conductivity test for a vertical borehole:

  • Energy peak loads
  • Monthly energy loads
  • Estimated geological conditions (discussion with geologist or driller familiar with the site)
  • Land area available for construction of the ground heat exchanger

A thermal conductivity test for a horizontal ground heat exchanger requires similar information before setting up a testing program.

An open water well system may be appropriate for some geothermal projects in some regions. Similar information is required to determine if an aquifer can support the energy needs of a specific project.

Geo-Xergy has the equipment and trained personnel needed to develop an appropriate testing program and conduct the tests to gain the greatest value.
