The City of Roseville, MN recently developed policies to reduce municipal greenhouse gas emissions. The single largest energy use in the City was the Hockey Arena and Speed Skating Oval located on the City Hall Campus. The campus includes a banquet facility connected to the Ice Rink, a 100,000 square foot maintenance garage, a 70,000 square foot City Hall and Police station and a Fire Hall.
A long-term strategy was developed to reduce energy consumption in the campus buildings. Current energy consumption was analysed for each of the buildings and a plan was developed to allow energy taken from the refrigeration plants in the hockey arena and speed skating oval and transfer the energy to the nearby maintenance garage and city hall.
The first phase of the plan was implemented in 2008. Geo-Xergy worked closely with Karges-Faulconbridge, a Minneapolis based mechanical engineering firm, to replace the ice rink floor and refrigeration plant in the hockey arena and construct the first phase of a vertical ground heat exchanger (GHX). Future phases will connect the nearby buildings to the GHX to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and eliminate the use of natural gas for heating.
