Geo-Xergy Systems specializes in working with integrated mechanical systems. Many larger buildings have cooling or refrigeration
requirements much of the time, even in colder northern climates. Heat gains from computers and other equipment, lighting, occupants
and solar gains very often drive the building loads. This has become even more pronounced over the last 5-10 years as high energy
costs have driven building owners, building designers and developers to improve the building envelope and install heat and energy
recovery equipment.
The "waste" heat typically rejected from the building through a cooling tower can be reclaimed. Energy can either be used to power
pumps and fans to throw heat to the outside air, or it can be used to heat other areas in the building, produce hot water or melt snow
on the sidewalks around the building. The reclaimed heat is free.
Often the "waste" heat can't be used immediately. Instead of throwing the valuable energy away, it's possible to store the energy. The
earth around the building can store thermal energy by circulating warm water through a ground heat exchanger (GHX). Heat pumps can
draw the stored energy from the GHX when needed to provide space heating or hot water.
There are often opportunities to transfer energy to the ground from a building with large cooling or refrigeration loads. If other
buildings that require heat, the stored thermal energy can be used to enhance the performance of heat pumps connected to a warm GHX.
A good example of this can be found where a building such as an ice rink with continuous refrigeration loads is located near a swimming
pool with almost continous heat needs. Both building owners benefit. The owner of the pool benefits because the heat rejected to the
GHX provides a better heat source for the heat pumps in the pool, and the ice arena owner benefits because the heat taken from the
GHX lowers the temperature of the heat sink for the refrigeration plant.
Geo-Xergy works with you to optimize the overall system in a holistic approach. This can often reduce the construction cost of
the system because less equipment is needed. The maintenance costs are often reduced because there is less equipment to maintain.
Energy consumption is reduced because the equipment works more efficiently and the heat is recovered for use in other parts of the
building or the building next door, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.
