Heating and cooling loads in residential buildings can vary significantly, depending on the life styles and habits of the occupants. A building designed for “plus 55" occupants has different internal gains than an condo project designed for younger families where parents and children are at school or work most of the day. Hot water consumption can be different from one to the other, but can be used to absorb excess heat from cooling the building.
Multi Family
YWCA Elm Centre, Toronto, ON
Status: Completed November, 2010
Brief description:
The 17 storey, 212,000 square foot YWCA Women’s Residence is built to LEED Silver Standard. The building is constructed above a vertical ground heat exchanger consisting of 88 boreholes to a depth of 500'. The limited site limited the area available for construction of the ground heat exchanger. A dry fluid cooler was required to prevent overheating of the ground heat exchanger.
Innovations:
- Geothermal heating and cooling with vertical ground heat exchanger
- Radiant floor heating
