Energy Modeling

Energy_modelThe foundation of any mechanical system is a good understanding of the energy needs of the building it is to serve. An energy model predicts the peak heating and cooling requirements of a building on the coldest and warmest day of the year. More importantly, analysis of hourly climate data and accurate building scheduling for occupancy, lighting and ventilation provides us with a detailed simulation of the building operation through each hour of the year.

This type of detailed building energy simulation is needed to accurately predict energy consumption in the building and energy cost based on the utility rate structure based on the location. It is also needed to develop accurate financial models and life cycle costing needed by the owner.
Hourly energy simulation is the only way to accurately develop a simulation of ground heat exchanger operation. This allows us to determine the most appropriate configuration of the ground heat exchanger, the land area needed to build it, and to estimate the construction cost. This is key information needed to provide the owner with an accurate financial model on which to base his/her decisions.

Ongoing energy modeling throughout the design process allows us to interface with the architectural and engineering design team to optimize the design of the building, the mechanical system and the ground heat exchanger, thereby reducing capital cost
